Mangosteen, a Southeast Asian fruit (Garcinia mangostana), has been revered for centuries. Thailand, where it originated, even bestowed upon it the title "queen of fruits." Traditionally used for treating ailments, mangosteen has piqued scientific interest for its potential cancer-fighting properties due to its rich antioxidant content.

Evergreen mangosteen trees take a significant amount of time to mature, with fruiting typically beginning after a decade, and sometimes even up to 20 years. The good news is that these trees can produce fruit for over a century.

For optimal fruit production, mangosteen trees require a tropical climate with consistent temperatures between 40°F and 100°F. Seedlings are even more sensitive, struggling below 45°F. This makes cultivating mangosteen in the United States particularly challenging, with no measurable production in the contiguous states.

Harvesting commences when the fruit reaches a deep purple color, with a softened rind and a diameter between 1.33 and 3 inches. Due to its susceptibility to bruising, mangosteen is meticulously hand-picked or harvested with a cutting pole. Since the fruit won't ripen further after picking, it's crucial to harvest only mature specimens.

Excessive wet periods can lead to a condition called "gamboges," where latex seeps into the fruit's flesh, causing yellowing and bitterness. Thread blight, a fungal disease, can affect shaded trees in humid areas, manifesting as webbing-covered fruit. Stem canker, another disease, creates growths on branches and can lead to foliage and branch dieback, potentially killing the tree.

Asian fruit flies pose a significant threat to imported mangosteen from Southeast Asia. This was the reason behind the U.S. Department of Agriculture's import ban until 2000. Even now, imported mangosteen must undergo irradiation. Mangosteen caterpillars can defoliate young trees and are challenging to detect due to their nocturnal feeding habits. Insecticides offer an effective control method. Small ants can infest the trunk and branches, hindering or damaging new growth. Larger animals like monkeys, bats, and rats may also target the trees and damage developing or ripening fruit.

The Asia Pacific region is projected to dominate the mangosteen market throughout the forecast period. This dominance is attributed to major producers like China, India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Import data from Vietnam and Peru further strengthens this projection, indicating a growing market in Russia. India's mangosteen production is primarily concentrated in Kerala, followed by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Market Segmentation:

The global mangosteen market report offers a breakdown of the market by various categories. These categories include form (referring to the physical state of the mangosteen product, like solid, liquid, gel, or powder), application (the industry using the mangosteen, such as food & beverage, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, or cosmetics), end user (who is buying the mangosteen product, either retail consumers or industrial users), and distribution channel (how the product reaches the end user, through specialty stores, online retailers, supermarkets/hypermarkets, or other channels).

Market Dynamics:

Mangosteen consumption is driven by a growing interest in its potential health benefits. Studies suggest that compounds like xanthones in mangosteen may:

  • Boost Immunity: These compounds might have antimicrobial and antiviral properties, potentially aiding the immune system in fighting infections.
  • Reduce Chronic Disease Risk: Mangosteen's antioxidants may help combat chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.
  • Support Gut Health: Mangosteen may act as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which can improve digestion and nutrient absorption.

However, some potential downsides to mangosteen consumption also need to be considered:

  • Blood Clotting: Mangosteen might slow blood clotting, increasing bleeding risks for those already prone to it.
  • Lactic Acidosis: Consuming mangosteen could raise the possibility of lactic acidosis, a condition where lactate buildup in the body disrupts blood pH.
  • Import Restrictions: Historically, concerns about pests like Asian fruit flies led to import bans on mangosteen in some countries, like the US (though regulations have since changed).

Market Keyplayers:

  • DBC, LLC, and Nature’s Sunshine Products, Inc.
  • Royalty Health
  • Genesis Today
  • Lakewood Juice Company
  • Vemma
  • Mangosteen Dietary Supplements
  • Others
